Nature Photography Day - June 15, 2006

First Annual Nature Photography Day Contest

NANPA has successfully lobbied to have June 15th officially designated as Nature Photography Day. The date, according to the Association's announcement, "has been set aside to honor the influence of the field as an artform, a vehicle for conservation, and an invaluable way of capturing the natural world."

To help celebrate, Kathy Bauer of Fine Print Imaging in Fort Collins, CO has donated prizes for a RMNP Nature Photography Day Contest. Kathy and Fine Print Imaging have been generous in their support of us in the past, and it's great to have them involved yet again - thanks, Kathy! A general description of the contest will be provided below, and an event page with the details will be set up this weekend. Fine Print Imaging has donated gift certificates in the amount of $100, $75 and $50 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes.

Since most of us don't enjoy the leisurely life of a full-time photographer , rather than limiting the contest to one day (a Thursday at that...), we thought it would be in good form to recognize the whole week that includes Nature Photography Day and encourage image submissions captured during that week - June 11th - June 17th. Obviously there's no way to verify that, so we're on the honor system here. But the goal is to get out and shoot something versus pulling from the archives. . We'll take the submissions during the following week, allowing time for folks to develop film if necessary, and then shortly afterwards we'll vote.

Somewhat different from many of our contests, we'd like to encourage submissions that reflect an appreciation of Nature and Nature Photography as much as 'artistic' submissions. Ideas for activities and images that are in the spirit of Nature Photography Day can be found on the NANPA website. When voting rolls around, we'd like to see votes for the images that best capture the sense of what Nature Photography means to us individually. It'll be a pretty wide open contest - should be a lot of fun!
